The Composer’s Kitchen

This unique event focuses on the string quartet, and merges the concepts of workshop, laboratory, game room and master classes. It is a week-long workshop for 6 emerging composers with the string quartet and 2 experienced composers. Their work is read, dissected, discussed, worked, analyzed, replayed, and then executed at the closing concert.
First annual special edition

The Quatuor Bozzini (Montreal) presents the 8th edition of the Composer’s Kitchen in a new expanded format in conjunction with the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (AKA the “HCMF //”), the largest international festival of new music and experimental in the United Kingdom.
The Composer’s Kitchen will be the first exchange with the prestigious festival by providing opportunities for composers in the UK to participate in the Canadian publishing and inviting four Canadian composers in the new edition in the UK. The six composers selected will participate in two facets of the event:
- the one-week workshop in Montreal in April 2012, which will conclude with a concert open to the public laboratory;
- a workshop / master class for three days in Huddersfield, UK in November 2012, to refresh and bring to maturity the pieces created in the spring. This part ends with HCMF / /.
Eligibility and Selection
The Composer’s Kitchen 2012 is open to the emerging generation of:
- Canadian composers (Canadian citizen or resident)
- Composers of the United Kingdom (native or foreign nationals residing permanently in the UK).
Six participants (four from Canada, two in the UK) will be selected. Applications will be evaluated based on originality, creativity, artistic vision and quality of the compositions submitted. The Quatuor Bozzini reserves the right to select participants. Incomplete applications, or which do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be presented to the jury.
Each composer accepted for CK will receive a full scholarship for his participation. In addition, travel expenses will be covered by the following table:
