VISI: Art Song Lab

Summer Program for Emerging Composers and Writers

Art Song Lab 2012

June 2-8, 2012
Vancouver, BC

Presented by the Vancouver International Song Institute in partnership with The Canadian Music Centre BC Regional Hub

Art Song Lab is a week-long program for creative artists interested in the collaborative process of poetry/music fusion, interpretation, and performance. Ten writers and ten composers will be partnered to create new art songs which will be premiered by renowned singers and pianists at the SONGFIRE Festival of Song. The program includes intensive rehearsals with the performers, daily forums with internationally distinguished composers and poets, group discussions of collaborative process, and the “Songsparks” series of interactive evening workshops.

Art Song Lab produces new work in a new way; it invites creators and audiences to share the experience of words meeting music in performance. These exchanges contribute to ongoing artistic conversations that spark new art forms and collaborations.

Distinguished mentors for Art Song Lab 2012 include composers Imant Raminsh and Leslie Uyeda and poets Betsy Warland and Lorna Crozier, with VISI performing artists Alison d’Amato, Corey Hamm, Rachel Iwaasa, Phoebe MacRae, Lynne McMurtry, and Michael Robert-Broder. The ASL program is coordinated by pianist Alison d’Amato, poet Ray Hsu, and composer Michael Park.

Participants have full access from June 9-24 to audit VISI’s array of lectures and masterclasses, featuring an international group of scholars and artists in groundbreaking interdisciplinary Art Song innovation studies.

Application deadline is February 1st, 2012. Early registration is strongly encouraged. A maximum of 10 composers and 10 poets will be accepted.
