On May 31, at CBC Studio One, Standing Wave, Vancouver’s premiere contemporary chamber ensemble, presents a concert of 21st Century classics. Avant-garde chamber music inspired by Pop culture, industrial noise, Renaissance dance, and magical realist literature from five leading Canadian composers will comprise this riveting program. The programme will feature music by Canadian composers Rodney Sharman, Jeffrey Ryan, Jocelyn Morlock, Linda Bouchard, and Cameron Wilson, along with John Kastelic’s From the Crazy Place Outbroken, the Audience Choice from Standing Wave’s concert at the 2011 Sonic Boom Festival.

Revel in the intimacy of live, conductorless chamber music; thrill at the kineticism and immediacy of cutting edge contemporary sounds.

This special concert is being recorded by CBC Radio 2 for broadcast on The Signal with host Laurie Brown.

Pacifica Singers Audition

The Pacifica Singers will be holding auditions for new members on the evening of Tuesday, May 31.

The Pacifica Singers are a select ensemble of 16-18 voices led by award-winning conductor John William Trotter, Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Chamber Choir.  The ensemble was established in 2009 to provide a performance venue for experienced and motivated choral singers whose goal is to make music at a very high level.  In providing direct exposure to the world of professional music making, it offers an experience of exceptional value for singers intending to make music their career.  Current members are drawn from throughout the Lower Mainland region, with many also serving as conductors, music educators, and/or professional singers in their communities.

The Pacifica Singers will perform in four concerts with the Vancouver Chamber Choir in the course of the 2011-2012 season, in addition to an independent production.

Most rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings, with occasional Sunday rehearsals and additional dress rehearsals as required.

Creative Composer’s Competition

Do you love to compose?
Then we have a terrific opportunity for you!
Conservatory Canada, Mayfair Music Publishing and Long & McQuade Music Stores invite you to submit your most creative compositions to us for review. Prizes from Long & McQuade and Mayfair Music will be awarded, and winning compositions will be included in a new Mayfair Music Publication. This opportunity is open to Canadian students of all ages. Submissions should be written in contemporary music styles as included in the Conservatory Canada Contemporary Idioms Syllabus for piano. All entries are required to be submitted online in PDF format. Audio/video performances of compositions are not required, but can be uploaded to YouTube for review.

Entry fee is $20 per submission. Compositions will be reviewed by a panel of adjudicators.
Deadline for entries is May 31, 2011.
Proceeds will be used to further Conservatory Canada Special Projects.
