The Happening Festival of New Music and Media 2011, will be held from January 26 to 29, 2011 at the Rosza Centre University of Calgary. Happening 2011 is four days of sonic discovery highlighting  established and emerging practices in sound and music. This year’s festival will focus on musical collaborations between Alberta and British Columbia.

The festival will offer five concerts featuring new and recent works for soloists, chamber ensembles and orchestra along with improvising ensembles and telemedia performances linking musicians from around the world. Visiting artists will present lectures and demonstrations on their work. The featured guest composer will be Keith Hamel from the University of British Columbia who will participate in concerts featuring his innovative interactive compositions.

The Land’s End Chamber Ensemble will open the festival with guest clarinetist François Houle and the UCalgary String Quartet, presenting a concert of interactive music together with musicians in Vancouver. Pianist Colleen Athparia, and soloists Jeremy Brown and Edmond Agopian from the University of Calgary will present a concert with the University Orchestra and the New Music Ensemble. New Works Calgary will present Vancouver’s Nu:BC Collective in a pan-Canadian concert of new music for flute, cello and piano featuring the première of a new work by Montréal composer Brian Cherney. Canada Research Chair in Telemedia Arts, Kenneth Fields, will guide collaborators and the public in a special telemedia concert event in the Doolittle Studio. The festival will close with pianist Luciane Cardassi, presenting a program of new and recent work for solo piano with film and electronics by Canadian and Brazilian composers. A series of lectures and workshops in new music, media practices and improvisation will round out the activities at Happening 2011.

Happening 2011 will also present the world première performances of new works by Allan Bell, Laurie Radford, Michalis Andronikou, Cavan Carson and ‘Wild Card’ compositions announced in each concert. And this year’s interactive installation will be Art/Music/Science: Tangents Through Common Ground by Jerry Hushlak, David Eagle & Jeff Boyd.
